SORATA to CONDORIRI and PEQUEÑO ALPAMAYO 5.370M. 13 days

1 Day.- LA PAZ – SORATA

At 10:00 a.m. hours we leave La Paz, driving through the beautiful landscape of the Cordillera Real, passing near Lake Titicaca, and then through the town of Achacachi, Warisata where the imposing nevadas of Ancohuma and Illampu can be seen. Then we get the pass from where we have our first views of the beautiful little town of Sorata, altitude 2,700m where we rest for our first night at the Hotel.

2 Day.-  SORATA – LACHATHIYA

On the first day, five hours of trekking start at 08:00 am, and we enjoy the beautiful scenery of Sorata and the imposing nevada Illampu, before we reach the first camp at Lachathiya, altitude 3,850m.

3 Day.- LACHATHIYA – JANQ’U UMA

We leave in the morning and continue climbing towards the pass of Ancohuma, altitude 4,749 m, from where we enjoy the scenery of the high valleys of Sorata. A great deal of Andean flora and fauna may be seen as we descend to the next camp at 3,900m.

4 Day.-  JANQU UMA – COCOYO

A two-hour walk we come to Kurahuasi pass, altitude 4,479 m, before we descend to the river. Then, after passing through the village of Cocoyo, we continue on to the campsite, altitude  3,900 m, a journey of four hours or so.

5 Day.-  COCOYO – CHAJOLPAYA

With a 2-hour ascent to the 4,500m Sarani pass, from where we can see the nevada Warani Wara (Negruni) and the river Chajolpaya.

6 Day.-  CHAJOLPAYA – NEGRUNI.

After breakfast, we go on for 3 hours to the Warawarani pass, altitude 4,900m, near the glacier of these mountains, overlooking the Chajowara and other mountains. Then we continue down to the campsite near a lake at altitude 4,100m.

7 Day.-  NEGRUNI – LLOCO LLOCONI

Following  the river Chiquini down, for six hours, we reach the church of  Palca, then up through the Waraco cerranías, and reach the camp in the mountains of The Tres Marias.

8 Day.-  LLOCO LLOCONI – VENADA

After breakfast we start the walk towards another pass at 4,800m, passing small gorges, with Andean fauna, then we descend through the gorge to a small river which is near a wagon trail before we arrive at Venada.

9 Day.-  VENADA – KOTIA

After breakfast we head up to Mollo pass, at 4,900m, from there we descend to the valley of Janqu Quta, passing various glacier lagunas and mines and so descend to the campsite at Kotia, altitude 4,650m.

10 Day.- KOTIA – AJWANI

After breakfast we continue climbing the foothills contouring Chacapa where we see abandoned gold mines amongst the beautiful scenery of the plateau.

11 Day.-  AJWANI – JURI QUTA

Trekking In six hours we pass the Janchallani 4,860 m. to reach the second step Juri Quta 4,900 m. then descend by the environment of the place, and descend to camp Laguna Juri Quta 4,700 m.

12 Day.-  JURI QUTA – CONDORIRI

We go on up to the Apacheta pass, and proceed towards the highest point of the trek, which is Pico Austria, altitude 5,300m. From here we have spectacular views of the Condoriri group of mountains before descending to the laguna Chiara Qutade, altitude 4,700 m. This is the base camp for climbing the mountains in the Condoriri massif.

13 Day.- CLIMBING PEQUEÑO ALPAMAYO – LA PAZ.

At 00:00 am we prepare the climbing equipment and breakfast, before setting off for the summit of Little Alpamayo, altitude 5,350m. A climb of some 5 to 6 hours. At the summit we rest for a while before continuing the 4 hours dewscent to the base camp at Laguna Chiyara Quta. After a rest and lunch, we continue to Tuni where we leave the mules, and take transport back to the city of La Paz.
